I resonate to the word “Desirable” in Minimum Desirable Product because it implies an emotional response. Emotional responses spark movements. Sparking a movement is essential to any startup.

Great post. It is also important to define the “viable” stuff earlier. It is not always possible to get the customer to visit twice to your site. The first impression counts, so defining what is “viable” for getting the right first impression and retention is the key.

This presentation rewired my brain. Thank you.

I know somebody who built a viable product that made money with Google Ads. The MVP for making money with Google ads is:

- A large, keyword rich database
- Ads everywhere
- A confusing UI and "no escape" from the site, apart from ads (i.e. no outbound links -- every click either takes you to another page on the site, or an ad.

Problem is, these are strengths for MVP but weaknesses for MDP. Nobody bookmarks the site, nobody comes back deliberately, nobody tells their friends -- even though the site's functionality is useful and powerful -- because it's ugly and confusing.

He'd be making more money now if he'd injected some MDP thinking early on.

Thank you Andrew for posting this. I started writing about shipping imperfect products a few years ago but this is a far better and more powerful presentation. There is a lot to be said about the opportunity cost of perfection and the difference between shipping a lemon and shipping a band aid.
