Put differently, part of the LTV of users is their option value for  business model innovation.  &lt;/p&gt;

But I do feel it&#039;s best to actually treat the following separately:&lt;br /&gt;
(1) The direct monetary value of a user  (Monetary-LTV?). &lt;br /&gt;
(2) The value of their contribution to a site/community (Community-LTV?).&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The former deals with the question of &quot;how you make money&quot; the later &quot;how you build a community&quot; . Not exactly the same. &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The former specifically is quite easy to model and all web startups should (but not many do) &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The later is a bit more tricky because, like you stated, it has a lot to do with the quality of content produced and its (actual or perceived) value for viral-growth or retention. Tricky but doable if you narrow down to this definition for a particular social-network or property&lt;/p&gt;

One thing that means more than friends in ones passions. For example, you have some 20 year old on FB who has 10 friends there. His passion in life is skateboarding and hopes to be a professional skateboarder. He heard about a new Tony Hawk niche social network where not only does Tony talk to you, 20 other professional skateboarders talk to you. So will this guy leave FB? Naaaa. Will he quit going there less and less, the more this new skateboarding social network adds more value? I think so. - Again... if social networks want to evolve to the next stage, they must get past relying on advertising as their only main source of revenue and add more value for stickiness other than, a place to superpoke your friends.  &lt;/p&gt;
