This is a great summary and helps clarify for me. I've used vertical ad networks as an advertiser though the goings on behind the scenes were always opaque to me and I was curious about them. We've also considered becoming a publisher as we're relaunching our web site soon with more content. We'd almost certainly join an ad network in that case. One thing I've never understood is how much of the money I pay ends up going to the individual sites, how much to the ad networks and how much to the infrastructure company. Let's say, for example, that I used Peerflix, powered by Adify (I'm in the film business, though I haven't specifically used Peerflix, I've used Gorilla Nation and Indieclick). I buy $5000 worth of ad inventory over 1 month. How much of that goes to Peerflix, how much to the individual sites and how much to Adify?

Hey Andrew,

good summary of this definite NY phenomenon. Everyone and their grandmother are currently looking at the vertical model; one of the big questions remains is whether big brand A wants to advertise on premium site B or also on their "carefully selected" network. Pulse360 also recently ventured into the Adify space - so the race for providing the shovels for the vertical ad network plays is heating up. I'd still love to know how Cox got to a $300MM valuation for Adify - but congrats to the team!
