Is that the view from your place? If so, we must be very close neighbors, as that is almost exactly the view from my place!

Good job, Andrew!

I moved from Romania to Washington DC, then to West Virginia, then to Phoenix, AZ.
One more hop and I could end in SF :) (althought my business partner insist I go to Austin, TX - another american tech hub).

Two bad I couldn't moved in SF 2 years ago, when I had several startup ideas which now were implemented by other people :(...

But I never say never :)...for now, I'm just working at my ideas from Phoenix...

But your post is inspiring, thank for it!

I've been there in November for a short trip (yeah, from the old Europe!) an since then my old idea to move there has taken a bit of ..."thickness".

And get yourself a copy of 'Broke Ass Stuart's Guide To Living Cheaply in San Francisco' by travel writer and local legend Stuart Schuffman - you'll make money buying this book! (After all, there's nothing worse than moving to a great city to start your fabulous new life, surfing some mate's couches and not knowing where to get a cheap but good meal, a stiff drink and a place to chill after a hard days networking).

Andrew,

It seems like only yesterday that we met for the first time. You'd done a phenomenal job of establishing yourself in the Valley. Now it's time for me to learn some lessons from you on viral marketing!

Great article. I could not agree with you more on the "build a network, start a blog" bit.

I'm not in SF (I'm in Boston), but that stuff seems to work on this coast too. :)

Great list, and all true!

I'd just add that the new person should strive to add something. When you meet influencers and people important to you, bring something to the conversation. It doesn't have to be amazing, it could just be being more passionate than anyone else about something, but add something and people will remember you for and appreciate your presence. Just showing up will not have the same affect.

San Francisco is a great town to arrive and hit the ground running. I've lived here 15 years and see it happen over and over again. This is the kind of town where someone is an old timer come their 2 or 3rd year. But the consistent trait in all people I've seen do this is they are running when they hit the ground and they keep charging ahead into what they are most engaged by.
