I would replace #6 with whether they use nice rewrites. For instance:

Bad: viddler.com/getVideo.php?5225525uid?=5225223

Good: viddler.com/andrewchen/videos/5225525/

yep, totally. great fucking post

eBay was ugly as sin for years (and still is).

that said, i think “product innovation” could be re-defined as:
1) randomly test lots of shit all the time
2) measure to see what works / gets adopted
3) double-down on stuff that does; rinse & repeat.

but whether or not you design or guess, measure the hell out of it to see what is *actually* working.

Wow, I don't know why I visit this site. Although #10 is true, #9 and #8 are silly....and #6 is absolutely ridiculous:

"...You assess a site's quality based on if it's written in Ruby versus Java..."

One should assess a site's quality based on whether or not it consistently gives you the information you need.

CGI, PERL, ASP, JAVA, PHP...all of those can be used to consistently write quality code to give quality information.

Andrew, great article. We Silicon Valley entrepreneurs are trapped in our little tech bubble, and we tend to fall into the engineering entrepreneur’s trap – focus only on product. There are so many other areas to innovate on!

Seriously though, there's definitely a balance to be struck between taking a ridiculous level of pride in your work, and producing something quick and dirty to get to market asap. Only revenue can generate bread & butter!
