Nice article that provokes some interesting thoughts. I consider metrics a good gauge of SEO success, but I also view it as part of a larger picture. I work in the e-commerce industry where gross sales has to be included as part of my SEO success. My experience has been that enhanced SEO metrics don't always go hand in hand with an increase in sales (at least in my industry). Hence, I only consider it a part of the total picture. Excellent info, though, and I'll certainly subscribe to your RSS feed.

With better web analytics, SEO will be eventually be a near science. However, SEO in some ways has to remain a black art, because natural search results were abused by SEO technicians when it first relied on Meta Keywords too much eventually causing that specific web page header element to be non-significant in effecting natural search rankings.

andrew you keep killing on this blog -- even over the holidays!

great framework & thoughts. particularly SEO dashboard, a/b tests for SEO.

other framework to consider would be opportunity cost for SEO vs other acquisition methods, where cost = time, effort, and/or $. altho personally I think most times SEO has excellent ROI.

btw, I also think Stephan Spencer is awesome... we had him do a great SEO intro presentation @ Web 2.0 Expo last year, and hope to have him back again. I believe his slides are online.
