some time people think it is easy to add friends in social network to grow or develop their profile to viral their traffic in Web 2.0, but it is not that as over time as mentioned in the post it really gets polluted!.

I think they should get away from that "only real friends" ambition completely. Than you could add someone just because you wanna know what's happening in the person's life, the same way you read someone's blog (you don't have to met a blogger to read the blog).

Hi

I'd add an even worst consideration on Facebook. Or, better, about the "legalized spam" feature of its applications

Simply put: I've lost any direct, human interaction. Most of the messages are automatically generated. People sends me odd stuff just for fun, and does not communicate anymore

The worst thing that happened to me was that I've found a very interesting person, great photos, same interests of mine, lot of topics to discuss about and passions to share

I was about to send her a direct message, but I left

The day after I thought that this is the OPPOSITE of what SN were supposed to be. It's against the inspiration of a certain kind of "Internet" we dreamed of

So I got to the conclusion that Facebook is evil. Sounds stupid?

As Facebook continue to grow, each user's friends list will also grow, and it will get to the point of "friend pollution" you described. This is inevitable. How to deal with this eventuality with new product innovation is key.

A friend add is a good ice-breaker. "Will you be my friend?" If a person are on your list, you collaborate with the rest of the world more often, regarding anything, because you have a lot of specialized qualities and interests around you that you can get in touch with. There is too much ice between strangers (and often too much heat between the ones that happens to know each other; something between is good). To move from family+local, and search the whole world, is the next step.

That's one good thing with web friends.

A good thing on another level is that people learn about other people's lives. We write about our lives and get inspired, on how to live, by reading about people's life. If we get fed with microblogging, we walk around thinking more about lifestyles and less about some less social interest (like fishing or whatever). If we now more about lifestyles, we understand people better, and that's good. I'm surprised that Facebook haven't try to kill Jaiku and Twitter more than they have, but maybe that's to come. And I think they should get away from that "only real friends" ambition completely. Than you could add someone just because you wanna know what's happening in the person's life, the same way you read someone's blog (you don't have to met a blogger to read the blog).

So, ice-breakers and understanding of lifestyles, that's internet to me.

First of all, I think "Friends" is a misnomer on Facebook. When you're trying to create the social graph, it goes well beyond just your friends.

As long as the network is able to track whose photos you've viewed and whose ap invitations you have accepted, it seems relatively simple to filter the relevant friends from the irrelevant. If you can prioritize feeds based historic interaction, you can eliminate a lot of the noise.
